When you need to connect into your workplace or home network, you can use a VPN (Virtual Private Network) to do this. This sort of setup is ideal for frequent travelers who need to connect their laptop into another network while on the road. This 7 step how-to covers connecting your current machine to a remote network that has already been setup with a VPN, another thing you can do is to get a firewall to protect your network, and there are great resources for this in sites such as https://www.fortinet.com/products/next-generation-firewall.
You can click on any of the images to zoom in on them.
The first step is to go to the Control Panel and select “Network and Internet”.
Next, select “Network and Sharing Center”
Now, we choose “Setup a new connection or network”
Choose the “Connect to a workplace” and then click on “Next”.
Select “Use my Internet Connection (VPN)”.
On this dialog, type in the name or IP address of the network you want to connect to. You can also give this new connection a descriptive name so you can easily remember it later.
Enter your credentials, i.e. your username and password. You can enter a Domain if needed (this depends on the server setup).
Once you enter the details, you can then click on the “Connect” button.
If you’ve entered everything properly, you should quickly connect to the remove network and be able to mount network shares or use “Remote Desktop Connection” under the “Accessories” menu to control the remote computer.
